![]() A little out of the way but if you have plenty of time its what I would do. That being said, I think the drive through RMNP to beautiful Grand Lake and up north to Laramie area would be a far more scenic way to travel to SD. However, it does sound like you'll get plenty of other scenic mountain drives so maybe not something you want to spend extra time doing. The drive through RMNP is awesome, not to be missed IMO. ![]() Yes, the Saratoga part might be a little out of the way but it gets you full value for the RMNP part plus the Medicine Bow Mts. We did much of the above last year driving from Hot Springs to Cheyene for lunch and then over to Saratoga by early afternoon and we did not leave Hot Springs all that early. Not well publicized but interesting and free (donations encouraged). A very interesting and quick stop at a sinkhole where the Indian drove Buffalo over the cliff. Then loop back to I-90 via 24 and 111 but just before getting on the freeway take the northside frontage road eastward (turn left that is) and go about a mile to the Vore Buffalo Jump. ![]() This area is at the eastern end of the Mountain time zone so the sun comes up earlier and goes down sooner than farther west. It might be tight.especially with daylight hours decreasing in the afternoon. Last year we saw real honest to gosh cowboys driving cattle in a howling wind/rain storm near Lusk. The nice part of all this is viewing the finges of the Thnder Basin National Grassland. 313 total miles to Newcastle so this would leave the afternoon.įor instance leaving Saratoga at 6am would mean 7:30-8am at Laramie for a quick breakfast then 241 miles of mostly 70mph to Newcastle so 3.5 hrs or so. I-25 north to US 18 to go thru Lusk, WY and north to Newcastle and US 16 into the Black Hills. Maybe breakfast in Laramie and then US 30 up to county 34 to conenct to I-25. This is a very spectacular drive.in my book far more so than RNMP and the light is best early in the day anyway. Then very early rise and backtrack to WY 130 for the Medicine Bow Mts. Figure about 7 hours with quick stops for sightseeing so it might be 9pm on arrival The Inn has a series of teepees over various temperature rock lined hot pools and an excellent restaurant.ĭenver to RNMP via US 36 & 34 to Granby then 125 thru Walden to WY border and WY 230. Unfortunately most of this is better for the WY forum than SD but.Īlthough you might not get the best use of it the hot springs at the Saratoga Inn in Saratoga WY might make a good stop after doing RMNP then do the spectacular Snowy Range Byway (130) over to Laramie.
